nds-bootstrap is a tool that allows loading DS(i) [[ROM]]s and [[DSiWare]] from a DSi's SD card or Slot-1 [[flashcard]]. From SD card it has high but not perfect DS game compatibility and near-perfect DSiWare compatibility. From flashcard its DS game compatibility is lower than most kernels, but better that some old kernels and runs on some homebrew-only flashcards. It is the only program to support running DSiWare on Slot-1 flashcards.

It also has several additional features compared to most flashcards such as an in-game menu with support for taking screenshots, reading text manuals, a RAM viewer, and more. It can also use the DSi's additional features in normally unsupported games, however this often causes more issues that improvements.

nds-bootstrap is not designed to be used on its own, instead it should be used with a separate front end program. The two current front ends are [[TWiLight Menu++]] and [[DS Game Forwarders|forwarders]] for the DSi Menu.

Since version 1.8 Unlaunch has included a file browser which, with default settings, is shown on turning on your console. This file browser allows for running any [[DSiWare]] or modern [[homebrew]] application from your [[NAND]] or SD card as well as the [[Slot-1 Game Card]]. It is also allows setting any DSiWare or modern homebrew to four hotkeys, in addition to when no button is pressed, which will load that application on turning on your console instead of Unlaunch's file menu. Unlaunch's file menu is set to always open when the console is turned on holding <kbd>A</kbd> and <kbd>B</kbd>, which cannot be changed.

These are ARM9 exploits that take over a enhanced DSi-mode cartridge. These cartridges (on the back) are labeled as ''TWL''. Unfortunately they don't have SD or NAND access but can be used to gather console information and maybe find other vulnerabilities. == DSiWare (True DSi-Mode) Exploits ==
These are ARM9 exploits that take over a DSiWare title. They run in the same context that the DSi-Enhanced games do, but with additional SD and NAND access. These exploits are valuable since they can be used to downgrade the console firmware to older versions, or install a persistent exploit such as Unlaunch. You can also run commercial homebrew applications from the SD card. However this doesn't allow any cartridge access.

These exploits take over the ARM7 processor. In the DSi, these processor handles critical operations and cryptography operations, among other things. These exploits are extremely rare and there's no concrete targets. The DSi menu (The Launcher) is known to run in the ARM7 context. At the moment there's only one exploit known as RocketLauncher.
